Beijing Cooperative Group of Studying Coronary Heart Disease
Since 1975, acupuncture has been used in 621 cases with angina pectoris in hospitals belonging to the Beijing Cooperative Group for Coronary Heart Disease. The dynamic changes were studied with electro-oscillography, echocardiography and rheoencephalography in some of these patients before and after acupuncture, in order to obtain some objective evidences with regard to the therapeutic effect of acupuncture in the treatment of coronary heart disease.
I. Methods
Shanzhong point directed subcutaneously for 2.5-2.8 cun toward Jiuwei point after puncture, points Neiguan and Zusanli were selected as the main points, with points Tongli, Quchi, Shenmen, Rugen, Jianshi and Ximen as secondary points to be selected according to the differential classification on the basis of "Wuxintong".
Manipulation: The "Bu" method (reinforcing method) was mainly used retaining the needle for 20 minutes.
II. Results
1. Improvements were observed in 89.2% of 621 cases, with marked improvement in 47.8%. Nitroglycerin could be stopped or decreased in dosage in 93.6% of cases, indicating that acupuncture did have some effect in the relief and abolition of symptoms of angina pectoris.
2. The effects before and after acupuncture were compared and improvements were obtained in 53.2% of 578 cases. Serial observations were made with the electro-oscillograph machine in 100 patients and marked improvements in EKG were found in 30 cases after acupuncture for 1-20 minutes.
The results showed that acupuncture might improve the coronary circulation and thereby the EKG changes gradually returned to normal as the symptoms of angina pectoris improved.
3. The echo-cardiograms in 100 cases of coronary heart disease were studied before and after acupuncture. They showed a marked difference in the amplitude of the posterior wall of the left ventricle as well as in the stroke volume (P<0.001), indicating that acupuncture might improve the function of the left ventricle in angina pectoris.
4. There were marked changes of every parameter in the rheoencephalogram after acupuncture in 50 cases (P<0.001), indicating an improvement in the cerebral and coronary circulations. These might be closely related to the improvement of the left ventricular function.
5. Effect of acupuncture at "Point"and "non-Point" sites on the echo-cardiogram and rheoencephalogram were compared and marked differences were found (P<0.001). This indicated the importance of selecting points along the meridians.
It might be concluded that acupuncture therapy for angina pectoris was rapidly effective, economic, easily available and without side-effects even after prolonged periods of application. It deserves further study in the future.
