In subtotal gastrectomy under acupuncture anesthesia, it was found that the changes of the pulse, tongue propers and symptoms during operation were significant in patients with the poor effect of acupuncture anesthesia, especially those of grade III. If the rules of the change of these symptoms were mastered and the relevant measures were taken, the effect of acupuncture anesthesia might be elevated. In light of this idea, 10 cases of grade III and 40 cases of grade II were collected, and their pulses, tongue propers and symptoms in the process of operation were summarized in accordance with the differntiations and types. The results showed that the main manifestations in the process of operation were uneasiness, stagnation of vital energy, blood stasis and ascent of vital energy in the stomach. Being required as the differentiation of treatment according to the different symptoms in traditional Chinese medicine, the points for relieving uneasiness, dispelling stagnation and stasis to keep smooth flow of vital energy, and descending the vital energy in the stomach were selected, namely, Xinshu, Neiguan, Shenmen, Renzhong, Chengjiang, Pishu and Zusanli. From 1977 to 1978, 143 cases of subtotal gastrectomy under acupuncture anesthesia by using the above-mentioned points were performed, in which 124 cases were rated as the 1st grade, being 86.7%, 16 cases as the 2nd grade, being 11.2%, 2 cases as the 3rd grade, being 1.4%, and 1 case as the 4th grade, being 0.7%. The successful rate was 99.3% and the rate of excellent and good results (grade I and II) was 97.9%, of which most cases were of grade I. It was proved that the points selected according to the above principle might elevate the effect of acupuncture anesthesia.
