Li Rui (Xicheng District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing)
20 cases of thyroidismus were treated with acupuncture, among them 18 cases had the symptom of exophthalmus.
When the patients received acupuncture treatment, all medications were suspended.
The main acupuncture points chosen were the centers of the diseased sites of thyroid (coinciding with the positions of Renying points). The accessory acupuncture points: Sizhukong, Zanchu, Chengqi and Fengchi, for exophthalmus, Neiguan, Shenmen for palpitation, and Sanyinjiao, Zusanli for polyhidrosis. Patients were treated daily with a soft and quick manipulation.
Each course of therapy varied from 22 to 124 days. All of the patients receiving acupuncture treatment showed different degrees of recovery. Among the 20 cases, 10 patients were nearly cured, 4 cases showed marked improvements and 6 cases were effective.
The effect produced by acupuncture treatment was discussed in the light of the channel theory.
