From March to August in 1978, we treated 72 cases of mammary hyperplasia with acupuncture in random samples and obtained efficacious results in 93.15% of the cases and 32.90% cured. In order to make further observations, 60 cases were selected and divided into 3 groups during the period from October to December in the same year, and treated with acupuncture, the injection of Phaseolus vulgaris L. extract and western medicine respectively.
Therapeutic Method
I. The group using acupuncture:
1. The first group of points: Wuyi, zusanli (both on two sides) and Tanzhong.
2. The second group of points: Tienzong, Jianjing, and Shenyu (all on two sides).
3. The point for adding and subtracting.
4. Method of acupuncture: Generally, the points of the two groups can be used interchangeably daily with medium stimulation. For those who are easy to get hottempered heavy stimulation can be used at Taichong point, but for those with both deficient vitality and blood slight stimulation can be used.
For all cases, the needles must remain for 20-30 minutes and be rotated two or three times.
5. Therapeutic course: One course is composed of 3 stages and each stage consists of 8 times of acupuncture.
II. The group using the injection of Phaseolus vulgaris L. extract:
Inject it into the points once a week. Four weeks are a course.
The patients of both groups were also observed upon their immunological reactions before and after the treatment.
III. The group using western medicine:
Administered with testosteronum according to the instruction.
The patients of each group were checked according to the standards of therapeutic effect after the course of treatment.
Results of the Treatment
I. Comparison of therapeutic effect: In acupuncture group (20 cases), 10 were cured, 8 satisfactory, 1 improved, 1 failed.
In injection group (18 cases), 2 were cured, 5 satisfactory, 4 improved, 7 failed.
In western medicine group (20 cases), 1 was cured, 3 satisfactory, 9 improved, 7 failed.
The effect on patients with mammary hyperplasia in the acupuncture group was much better than those in the others (P<0.01).
II. The relation between clinical types and the therapeutic effect:
According to the traditional Chinese medical theory, the patients with this disease can be divided into the following 4 types: liver melancholia type, liver hottempered type, liver and kidney fluids deficiency type and deficient vitality and blood type.
Among the 130 cases, 105 cases (80.7%) were due to the disorder of liver. By using determination of treatment based on the differentiation of symptoms and signs, according to the theory of traditional medicine, we obtained excellent results on patients of all types.
Immunological Observations
The two groups, 20 cases in the acupuncture group and 15 cases in the injection group were both kept under observation for cellular immune changes.
Comparison of the results of reactions of active and total erythrocyte rosette in these groups shows that many similarities were found between them. More important was that great difference existed between the reactions before and after acupuncture (P<0.01). This indicates that the acupuncture and the injection of Phaseolus vulgaris L. extract helps to increase the level of the cellular immune functions of the patients.
