In an attempt to investigate the relationship between the acupuncture anaesthesia response and the dialectical status of traditional Chinese medicine, 101, thyroid operations under acupuncture anaesthesia with monitoring of finger plethysmography were reported in this paper.
The operation, the acupoints, the determinations of dialectic status of traditional Chinese medicine and also the observations of various examination were performed by relative stable team in the whole series.
The results demonstrated that: (1) The acupuncture anaesthesia response in patients with "Yang" deficiency were superior to that of the "Yin" deficiency. The Grade 1 response was 87% and 58% respectively (P<0.05). (2) Increase in amplitude of plethysmography after acupuncture induction observed more common in patients with "Yang" deficiency than that of the "Yin" deficiency. The corresponding figure were 60% and 34% (P<0.05). (3) The proportion of increase in amplitude of plethysmography was also greater in patients with Grade I response than that of the Grade II and Grade III. The proportion of increase amounted 44% and 25% respectively (Pò0.05).
It is indicated in this paper that the more favorable response in patients with "Yang" deficiency may relate to the decrease in sympathetic nerve tone and dilatation of skin vessels. Therefore, the regulating effect of the human body by acupuncture may constitute an important aspect in mechanism of acupuncture anesthesia.
