Preliminary Observation On "Shu-Point Phenomenon" Of Propagated Sensation Along Channels

In the investigation of PSC we observed some interesting phenomena which manifested themselves as enforcement of needling sensation, temporal cease of PSC and a feeling like water-flowing towards a pit in the course of propagation. We term them "Shu-point phenomenon" of PSC.

Pulse current stimulation with round plate (0.5 cm. in diameter) or Dizhen (one of the nine types of needles of Neijing) electrode was used. The stimulating sites were the 12 Jings, the Guanyuan and Zhongji of Ren-channel and the Yangguan and Mingmen of Du-channel. All the cases were of marked PSC.

Majority of the positions where the Shu-point phenomenon developed were coincidental with the position of points. In the observation of 14 channels of 7 cases, 199 positions of enforcement of sore and distending sensations and the temporal discontinuation of PSC were equal with the positions of points, the rate was 58% in which the Cardiac, Pericardiac and Pulmonary Channels were 100%. Special attention was paid for the Large Intestinal Channel of 34 cases for 120 times of observation. In 19 points (no Jing used) 17 had Shu-point phenomenon. The highest frequency was Jianyu (101 times) and in order the next is Shjian, Binao and Quchi.  The longest time of temporal discontinuation of PSC was Quchi, its mean of 60 times was 113 seconds being apparently higher than the mean value of all the points. It was also higher than 43.3 sec. about Zhouliao, Hegu, Xialian, Binao and Jugu. All of these are the common points used clinically.

The points which had a higher frequency and longer time of temporal discontinuation of PSC are always adjacent or just at the joints. Therefore the doctrines upon manipulation "passing through the articulation and communicating the channel" and "passing through the articulation and connecting the needling sensation" seem rational.

The discovery of Shu-point phenomenon is benefit for the research of the character of point. Neijing stated "upon the communication of articulation, there are 365 meetings, the so called articulation is a place where spirit and energy travel to get in and out and does not have the meaning of skin, muscle, tendon or bone." However this description prefers that point is a special functional unit and in certain degree of signification it is identical with Shu-point phenomenon.
