A Survey Of Occurrence Of The Phenomenon Of Propagated Sensation Along Channels (PSC) In The Mass And Its Basic Properties

Cooperative Group of Investigation of PSC

By means of stimulation on the acupuncture points, a certain phenomenon of PSC may be induced in certain persons. These sensations travel along the courses  generally coinciding with the channels described in the classic literatures of traditional Chinese medicine.

In the recent years, more than twenty medical colleges, hospitals and institutes all over China have surveyed the phenomenon of PSC in the mass, including different nationalities, sexes, age groups and health conditions.

The method employed by most units was low frequency pulse electric stimulation. The Jings or the Yuans of the 12 main channels were chosen as the sites for stimulation.

When the PSC was evoked by the stimulation, the subjects would tell or point out the travelling course of the sensations. The direction and course of the PSC as stated by the subjects had been recorded. If the sensation travelled along the course of only one channel partially but over hip or shoulder joint, it was recognized as PSC positive. So was the partial propagation upon two channels but just over elbow or knee joint. The frequency of the occurrence in the mass observed was called as the ratio of occurrence of PSC. If the subject showed that travelling sensations were over the whole course more than six channels, he was registered as marked type of PSC and its frequency of occurrence in the population observed was called ratio of occurrence of marked type of PSC. According to the above standards, the results of investigation of the phenomenon of PSC are recorded in the following table.

The sum of subjects investigated is 63,228, among whom the rate of occurrence of PSC is between 12% to 24% beyond two thirds. It indicates that the results obtained from different districts are approximate. Traditional acupuncture manipulation was used by Henan Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Hebei Baoding District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for observation of PSC, the rate of occurrence of PSC was 53% and the percentage might be increased as high as 80% when prompting technique had been performed. Results showed that PSC might be developed without distinction of age, sex, nationality or health condition.

According to the extensive investigations, the PSC ordinarily has the following properties:

1. Propagation along channels -- the course of propagation is mostly identical with the descriptions of the traditional Chinese medical classics such as Lingshu and Nanjing etc.

2. Bipolarity -- from the site of stimulation, the sensation may propagate towards two opposite directions.

3. Sluggish propagational velocity -- it has a great individual difference, while the usual speed was 20 cm ± per sec. It might pass through whole course of a channel within several seconds for the rapid and on the other hand more than one hour for the slow.

4. Blockability -- it might be blocked by pressure (about 500 grams per square centimeter) applied on the course of the propagation.

5. PSC might reach the corresponding viscera or head organs and marked changes of function of those structures appeared during the arrival of PSC.

In a word the PSC is surely of existence in accordance with the investigation over China in recent years. Its properties were discovered then, they have been carefully compared and checked with the doctrines of the traditional medicine about the relationship of channel and viscera. It may be a foundation for further reach of the characteristics of PSC.
