The present article summarizes 100 cases of the operations in maxillofacial surgery under acupuncture anesthesia from May, 1970 to January, 1975. The effective rate is 97% and the excellent rate is 88%. Male cases were 66 and female 34 with an age range of 11 to 74 years.
The type of diseases includes tumors of maxilla and mandible, tumors of salivary glands and face, ankylosis of temporomandibular joints and facial deformity etc. There were 41 operations on jaw bones and 59 on soft tissues.
The points of acupuncture anesthesia used were of two groups:
The first group: Main points: auriculotemporal points. Auxilliary points: Futu, Hegu, etc.
The second group: Ear-body points. Ear points: Shenmen, Sympathetic nerve and Lung points. Body points: Futu, Hegu, Waiguan and Neiting etc.
Points on the affected side or both sides were punctured and electrically stimulated with a frequency of 160-250 cycles/min. All the patients received routine intravenous drip of meperidine, 1.0-1.5 mg/kg 10-15 minutes before the operation.
Auriculotemporal points group: 95.16% of the 62 cases were excellent.
Ear-body points group: 76.31% of the 38 cases were excellent. The difference of excellent rate between these two groups was significant (P<0.01).
The result mentioned above shows that acupuncture points have their own characteristics.
