The Application Of Points Used For Treating Trigeminal Neuralgia In Raising The Efficacy Of Acupuncture Anesthesia In Craniotomy

Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Department of Neurosurgery, Xuanwu Hospital of Beijing

Since 1973, 70 cases of trigeminal neuralgia have been treated mainly by acupuncture with satisfaction. For patients of delicate health, moxibustion or Chinese herb medicine were occasionally used. Five recipes of acupuncture points for treating this disease were taken as follows:

1. Zanzhu and Jinmen, or Fengchi and Lieque for "heat stagnation" due to external "wind"

2. Neiguan and Qihai, or Shangjuxu and Xingjian for "fire burning" due to the stagnation of "qi";

3. Zhigou and Zhaohai, or Shangjuxu and Neiguan for "Yin injury" by "dryness and heat";

4. Shenmen and Sanyinjiao, or Taichong and Taixi for "Yin deficiency" with an upset of "fire";

5. Shaohai, Yinlingquan and Shangjuxu for the upset of "fire" from heart and gall-bladder.

Lately, we applied the above recipes in acupuncture anesthesia for craniotomy and obtained a good result also. Out of 10 cases, 8 were of analgesic degree I and 2 of degree II. As a control, other two groups of craniotomy each with 10 cases were pain relieving by needling the points selected according to innervation and around the incision respectively, with a result of 3 cases of analgesic degree I, 5 cases of degree II for the former group, and 4 cases of degree I, 4 cases of degree II for the latter group. The analgesic effect of the patients acupunctured as in trigeminal neuralgia seemed apparently more favorable. Therefore it might be assumed that the points for treating trigeminal neuralgia were preferable in raising the efficacy of acupuncture anesthesia in craniotomy.
