685 cases of thyroidectomy under anupuncture anesthesia were performed in our hospital. The age varied from 13 to 67 years. 308 of 685 cases were divided into four groups according to acupoints selected along nerve segment or meridian distribution ('cervical', 'laryngopharynx,' and 'subcortical' points of the ear set, excellent rate 78.6%; "Hegu-Neiguan" set, excellent rate 70.0%; "Hegu-Neiguan Futu" set, excellent rate 81.6%; "Futu" set, excellent rate 92.8%). The results indicated "Futu" set had high excellent rate. Further clinical observations of 377 cases with "Futu" set also indicate that the effects were significant, the excellent rate was raised to 92.1%. Analysis of the data from the 685 cases seems to prove that "Futu" set has a relative specificity in thyroidectomy. The statistical test proves to be of clinical importance. "Futu" belongs to the cervical nerve III, "Hegu-Neiguan" belongs to cervical nerve V-VII. It was observed that the anesthetic effect was better if points were selected in close proximity to nerve segment than those farther away. This also seems to indicate that the relative specificity of the needling points have some relations to the distribution of nerve segment.
