The Clinical Summary Of 60 Cases Of Breast Cancer Under Compound Acupuncture Anesthesia

Anesthesia group, Hangzhou Tumour Hospital

From 1970 to 1978, 60 patients with breast cancer were operated on under acupuncture anesthesia. The surgery included radical mastectomy 39 cases, superradical mastectomy 2, simple mastectomy with axillary dissection 4 and simple mastectomy 15. Body acupuncture points were accepted in all cases, but one with ear acupuncture points. The body points, selected in general were Hautuojiaji, Guepen, Jianyu and Tiantu through Tanzhong. The instrument used was G6895 electronic apparatus. Period of induction was as a rule 15-30 minutes. Frequency of the current, ordinary tolerable, was 240 cycles per minute, but raised to 300-500 whenever the surgical stimuli became strong.

Adjuvants, for instance, luminal 0.1 preoperatively, lidocaine 0.06% 150 ml with adrenaline 1:15X10{4} for dermal infiltration, pethidine parenterally during the operation and sometimes even procaine for field block seemed to be essential for a perfect operative condition. Incomplete analgesia was the chief shortcoming.

Among these 60 cases, 22 (36.62% cases anesthesia was excellent, 30 (50.65%) good, 7 (11.67%) fair and 1 (1.66%) failure. Neither anesthetic accident nor complication was noticed. Convalescence of all of these cases was smooth and unevenful. Therefore, acupuncture anesthesia is indicated especially for those of aged, weak and suffering from cardio-pulmonary diseases.
