The Observation Of The Effect On 126 Cases Of Appendectomy Under Acupuncture Anesthesia

Research Group of Acupuncture Anesthesia for Appendectomy, Guangxi

This article reviews the effect of acupuncture anesthesia on 126 cases of appendectomy. The cases were chosen according to the criteria adopted by National Conference of Acupuncture Anesthesia. The patients aged from 14 to 68 years.

The G-6805 type stimulator was connected to the needles at right Pishu, Weishu, Zhangmen, Wushu points with continuous wave at the frequency of 4000-5000c./min. and the intensity of current was adjusted to what the patients could tolerate. The induction time of acupuncture anesthesia was 20 minutes.

Cushions were placed under right loin and thigh. A small MacBurney or right semilunar incision was made. 100 mg of sodium luminal was given intramuscularly as regular premedication 30 minutes preoperatively. A few patients were premedicated with 0.5 mg of atropine sulfate hypodermically. 1 mg/kg of dolantin was given by intravenous dripping 10-20 minutes before operation. The amount of 0.5% procaine given during operation did not exceed 5 ml. The effectiveness of acupuncture anesthesia in these 126 cases was classified into four grades: grade I, 23 cases, grade II, 62 cases, grade III, 36 cases and grade IV, 5 cases. The success rate was 96%; the score of grade I and II was 67.5%. No difference was noted between both sexes. The score of grade I and II amounted to more than 60% in all age groups, among which, the score for 14-20 age group was 72.7%, that for 31-40 age group was 72.4% and that over 61 years was 100%. In the group with the duration of operation lasting less than 20 minutes, the success rate was a little lower, but the percentage of grade I and II was higher. In the other cases, although the duration of operation was longer yet the success rate was higher, but the score of grade I and II was lower. Acupuncture anesthesia failed in 5 cases and was switched to other types of anesthesia 15 minutes after the onset of the operation. The efficacy of acupuncture anesthesia may be raised by using less than 5 ml of 0.5% procaine. If the propagated sensation went to the lower abdomen during needling at Pishu, Weishu points, the efficacy would probably be excellent or good.
