The Observation Of Some Physiological Indices In Subtotal Gastrectomy Under Acupuncture Anaesthesia

The Acupuncture Anaesthesia Cooperative Research Group of Zhongguo Medical College and Zhuanghe County Hospital

The changes of some physiological indices during subtotal gastrectomy under acupuncture anaesthesia were observed in order to find out an objective appraisal of the efficacy of acupuncture on the one hand, and the regions sensitive to visceral pulling on the other.

Starting from the patient lying on the operating table till the end of the operation, we measured the arterial blood pressure, pulse rate and the sweating on forehead every 5 min. The plethysmograph of the forefinger was monitored upon every stage of operative manipulations. Meanwhile the patient's subjective feelings at these stages were also recorded.

There seemed to be some close relationship between the above indices and the efficacy of acupuncture anaesthesia, i.e. the quantity of sweating, the alteration of pulse rate and the diminution in amplitude of pulse wave were the least in patients with the best analgesic effect and vice versa.

Besides, the main arteries of the stomach appeared to be the regions sensitive to pulling. Whenever these arteries and their vicinities were manipulated upon, the patient complained of severe pain, and there were marked changes in these indices.

Our observations may be helpful to the evaluation and improvement of the efficacy of acupuncture anaesthesia and thereby the elucidation of its mechanism.
