The Research On Characteristics Of Points From Practices Of Ophthalmologic Operation Under Acupuncture Anesthesia

Lu Nanhui, Liu Zhongren (Department of Ophthalmology, Fourth Hospital, Sian)

In the past seven years since 1972, 1,794 eyes from 1,560 cases were operated on under acupuncture anaesthesia. In this article we try to probe into the characteristics of the points in eye operation with acupuncture anaesthesia.

Three groups of points were tried:

1. The points near the eye: Yangbai penetrated towards Yuyao.

2. Hand points: Zhongzhu and Lieque.

3. Foot points: 'eye' area and 'head' area (extraordinary points).

All the patients operated on without regard to the nature of their eye condition were treated with the above 3 groups of points. The second group proved to be the best with an effective rate of 86%, which was statistically significant (P<0.01).

For the operations of glaucoma and strabismus, we compared the first and the second groups, the latter was better with significant difference. (P<0.01) We observed the two operated eyes on the same patient with different points and found that the analgesic effect of the hand points was better than that of the points near the eye.

We also found that Hegu is more preferable than Zusanli in stopping post-operative pain.

It is considered that the points possess the relative specificity.

In summary, Zhongzhu and Lieque are the ideal points for inducing acupuncture anaesthesia in eye operations. They were efficacious and do not interfere with the operating work.
