The Study On Acupuncture Analgesic Efficacy Related To Acidophil Variation Of Different Peptic Ulcer Patients During The Operation

Guangdong Cooperative Group of Acupuncture Anesthesia

We have previously reported that selective block of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system by intra-ME hydrocortisone implantation is accompanied by an inhibition of the activities of this system and a decrease of the acupuncture analgesic efficacy, while activation of this system by cAMPATP injection is accompanied by an enhancement of the acupuncture analgesic efficacy. Based on these animal experimentations, we have made some clinical observations on the relationships of acupuncture analgesic efficacy and the acidophil leucocyte variation pattern of diffrent peptic ulcer patient during operation.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the patient with peptic ulcer can be divided into two groups depending on their physiological conditions and pathological symptoms. Using the acidophil depletion as a parameter, we found that there were significant differences between the activities of the hypothalamuspituitary-adrenal system of the two different groups. The first group was named "adaptational stable type", while the second "adaptational unstable type". During the induction period of acupuncture analgesia, the percentage of acidophil of the first group almost remained unaltered, while the second group showed a significant drop; consequently, the gradient of the percentage of acidophil depletion between the induction and operation period of the first group appeared to be greater than that of the second group. It was very interesting to note that the proportion of good acupuncture analgesia (I and II grade) was higher in the first group than that of the second group. In agreement with the above observation, we observed that most patients belonging to the good acupuncture efficacy categories (I and II grade) showed the same acidophil variation pattern as that of the "adaptational stable type" (first group). The present data thus appears that the physiological activities of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system have some correlation to the acupuncture analgesic efficacy.
