An acupuncture trial was given before the performance of the operation in a total of 142 cases. Pain threshold measurement, plethysmographic recording and determination of the amylase content of the saliva were made before, during and after acupuncture trial. The data were correlated with the effect of acupuncture anesthesia, which were classified as excellent (44 cases), good (61 cases), fair (20 cases) and failure (17 cases). .

Better acupuncture effect was obtained in those patients who showed an increase of pain threshold and saliva amylase content and a slight increase of amplitude in plethysmographic curve in the preoperative acupuncture trial. Poor result was obtained in those who showed a significant lowering of plethysmographic recording and saliva amylase content, and a minimal increase in pain threshold.
