Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Guanganmen Hospital, Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Authors in this paper analyzed the therapeutic results of this combined treatment with amenorrhea, "Bi-syndrome"*, periarthritis of the shoulder and peripheral facial palsy by acupuncture with moxibustion. A comparative observation was also made with the thermal sensation resulted by igniting on the upper or lower end of the "moxa-wool".
*"Bi-syndrome" is a general term for arthritis etc. in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Method of observation:
All cases were treated and followed up in the out-patient-department. The diagnostic and the therapeutic criteria were identical with the control group (using acupuncture alone).
Manipulation and points selection:
Manipulation method of heat reenforcing or plain reenforcing with plainreducing were used. During the period of needle retaining a "moxa-wool" 1.5-2 cm long was attached to the handle of the needle, and the lower end of the "moxa-wool" being in a distance of 2 cm from the skin surface was then ignited with a match. For each time of treatment 1-3 points were selected and for each point, 1-2 segments of "moxa-wool" were used. A conventional prescription of acupuncture points for the above conditions were used, so they are not presented here in detail.
Results of treatment:
In 17 cases of amenorrhea, 16 were curred, and the results were effective in all of the 40 cases with periarthritis of the shoulder. In comparision with the group using acupuncture alone, the results of the treatment is gratifying. In the 180 cases of "Bi-syndrome", 164 cases were effective and in 51 cases of facial palsy, 49 were satisfactory, the results were nearly the same as in those cases treated merely with acupuncture.
Results of observation with different levels of ignition:
With lower ignition levels, the appearance of heat sensation was earlier and the maintainence period was longer, and consequently the increase of skin temperature was also higher. The method of moxibustion and acupuncture with the ignition from the lower end of the "moxa-wool" is advocated.
