Department of Anesthesia, Second Hospital of Hunan Medical College
Acupuncture anesthesia was used for 128 cases of pericardectomy from Sept. 1969 to July 1975. The youngest patient was 8 years old while the oldest one was 65 years. The most protracted course of the disease was 17 years, and the shortest was one month. More than 90% patients were without or with only a low-grade of hydrothorax, 70% cases did not have or only had a low-grade of ascites and 30% had moderate or severe grade of ascites. In 5% cases, the serum albumin was below 3 grams, while in 30% cases, A/G ratio appeared reversed from normal.
According to the different receipes of points of acupuncture anesthesia, we divided patients into four groups, i.e. multi-point group, 11 cases; Hegu Neiguan (plus Binao, Jianyu, Sanyangluo through Ximen and ear point), 36 cases; Sanyangluo through Ximen, 'chest' area on scalp (opposite side), 4 cases; Hegu and Neiguan (on the left side or on the both sides), 77 cases. The needles were rotated by hand manoeure in the multi-point group, in all other groups the electric pulse stimulator was applied. As for the adjuvant durgs used for analgesia, partial patients were given 40 ml. of 0.25-0.5% procaine either for local infiltration or for intercostal block; there were also a part of patients who received dolantin (1-2 milligram/kg). The effects of acupuncture anesthesia were: Grade I, 42 cases; Grade II, 66 cases; Grade III, 10 cases; Grade IV, 10 cases. But there was no death in these operations.
