The Application Of Acupuncture Anesthesia In Operations Of Domestic Animals

Veterinary Diseases Prevention Institute of PLA, Beijing

1. Effect

More than 700 operations on the head, neck, chest, abdomen, buttocks, perineum and limbs of five kinds of domestic animals -- horses, mules, donkeys, cows and pigs, performed under acupuncture anesthesia by needling Qiangfeng, Sanyangluo and Yeyan points; all of them succeeded, except 13 cases.

2. Nervous system plays an important role

The result showed that acupuncture anesthesia produced the expected analgesic effect only when structure and function of the nervous tissue beneath the needling point was kept intact.

3. Requistites

The induction time is not the principal factor. In case the stimulation is too weak, analgesia can not be induced no matter how long the induction time is. However the intensity of stimulation should be within a certain limit. If the strength of stimulation is too strong, the analgesic effect is reduced.
