We adopted the intradermal adrenalin test as an index to predict the effect of acupuncture anaesthesia in 1973 and the outcomes of 153 cases were encouraging, since then, another 352 cases have been observed to verify its validity.

This test consisted of an intradermal injection of 0.1 c.c. 1:1000 adrenalin on forearm and the measurements of the diameter or the blanching area every 5 min for ½ hour thereafter. In grades I and II patients, the blanching areas ceased to expand at 20 min, but those in grades III and IV patients continued to expand till 25 or 30 min. In grades I and II patients, the area was smaller at 25 min than at 20 min. whereas in the patients of grades III and IV, it was the reverse, the same results were obtained in different operations under acupuncture anaesthesia, including hysterectomy (92 cases), herniorrhaphy (105 cases) and supra-diaphragmatic operations (55 cases).

The results showed that the adrenalin test is a useful index of prediction in acupuncture anaesthesia.
