Acupuncture Anesthesia Group, Department of Orthopedics, 3rd Hospital of Beijing Medical College
For years, we used general anesthesia in the operations performed by anterior approach for resection of cervical intervertebral disc and interbody grafting at the third hospital of Beijing medical college. Acupuncture anesthesia has been used successfully for this operation since 1970. In the clinical practice of 255 cases, the effect of acupuncture anesthesia has been progressively improving.
This series of cases consisted of cervical spondylosis, fracture complicated with subluxation of cervical spine. The youngest was 19 years old and the oldest was 74. The duration of operation ranged from one hour forty five minutes to five hours and fortyfive minutes. The points selected for electric stimulation are Hegu on the right side, Waiguan on both sides and para-incision points. As an adjuvent, dolantin in the dosage of 1 mg per kilogram body weight was used.
In the discussion of this article, a comparison was made between the effects of the groups of points -- Hegu-Waiguan-Futu group and Fuyang-Feiyang group. The former group provided better effect. The acupuncture points have their relative specificity.
The amount of local anesthetics required during the operation under acupuncture anesthesia is only one fourth of that used during operations under local anesthesia.
The advantages of acupuncture anesthesia are its relative safety and less physiological disturbances. The postoperative wound pain was slight. Only about half of our patients needed analgesics postoperatively.
