The Measurement And Statistical Analysis Of Pain Threshold And Pain Tolerance Threshold Of Human Skin

Research Group of Acupuncture Anaesthesia, 3rd Hospital and Group of Mathematics, Beijing Medical College

The pain thresholds and pain tolerance thresholds of 14 skin points over various parts of the body were measured with K iontophoretic algometer in 100 subjects (50 males and 50 females).. The mean of 3 successive measurements and the measuring errors were calculated. The results were as follows:

1. The thresholds are various in different part of the body. Pain threshold was higher on head, neck and lower extremities whereas the higher pain tolerance threshold was found on head, face and neck.

2. The pain and pain tolerance thresholds were lower in females.

3. There was a tendency of elevation of the thresholds with aging.

4. There was a complicated cross influence between sex and age upon the thresholds.

5. The variance of individual difference in pain and pain tolerance thresholds was 3.7 and 5.6 times of their measuring errors respectively. Control of age and sex markedly reduced the individual difference, but further reduction needs the control of other factors to be investigated.

The thresholds of the same locus of subjects under balanced arrangements of age and sex apparently deviated from the normal distribution. If the logarithms of threshold values were calculated, it not only corrected the deviation, but also significantly improved the correlation coefficient between the two thresholds of pain and pain tolerance (r=0.75, P<0.001). Thus, it seems reasonable to use the logarithmic values in such investigations.
