From January, 1975 to November, 1978, 3,346 cases of abdominal ligation of oviduct were performed under acupuncture anesthesia. In these operations, clinical observation was made on effect of acupuncture anesthesia, selection of points, duration of induction and supplementary medication. The results showed that acupuncture anesthesia was good in its effect, with successful outcome in most cases and the rate of excellent and good results in 90%.
Observation on selection of points was made among four groups of the patients: the 1st group; Renzhong, Chengjiang; the 2nd group; ear points: Lung, Shenmen, Uterus, Endocrine; the 3rd group; Ciliao (bilateral), Sanyinjiao (bilateral); and the 4th group, Ciliao (bilateral). The rates of excellent and good results were 85.2%, 80.8%, 92.2% and 91.4% respectively. All the four groups of the points used could produce good anesthetic effects, but statistically, the effect of the latter two groups was significantly better than that of the former two groups (0.05>P>0.01).
The Ciliao point had the effect of reducing significantly the ill feeling upon traction of the oviduct. However, it is rather difficult to locate this point, through the repeated clinical practice and X-ray observation, two simple ways were found. (1) Body surface landmarks: the midpoint of lines connecting the rhomboid fossa in the waist and the cross points of bilateral gluteal sulci, (2) Bony landmarks: the midpoint of lines connecting the spina iliaca posterior superior and the sacrococcy-geal joint.
Except 54 cases in which 50 mg of Dolantin was used, none of the other patients in this series received procaine or analgesics. In comparing the group of the patients with Dolantin and that without Dolantin, there was no marked difference, thus manifesting that supplementary medication could be omitted. In comparing the rate of excellent and good resalts between acupuncture anesthesia and local anesthesia, the former is better than the latter. Therefore, it is obviously clear that acupuncture anesthesia is a suitable method for abdominal ligation of oviduct, especially for large-scale birth control program in the countryside, acupuncture has the merit of safety, simplicity and good effect.
