Since 1977 we have treated 46 patients on arrhythmia with acupuncture.
1. Selection of patients:
Patients with palpitation, fullness in chest or precordial pain, dyspnea and pulse beat more than 100/minute or less than 60/minute, or abrupt pulse, or intermittent pulse, or paradoxical pulse were selected. They were diagnosed as a stethoscopic arrhythmia and further proved by ECG examining after rest 30 minutes.
2. Methods of treatment:
Main points: Neiguan, Shenmen.
Auxiliary points: Huatuojiaji T[4]-T[5] or Lieque. One or two points used one after another day every time. Insomnia plus Anmian and hypertension plus Sanyinjiao, Taichong.
The patient took a supine position. Acupuncture with reenforcing as the main method, puncture points with weak, middle stimulation. Retaining the needle in points for about 5-15 minutes, rotating the needle shortly to strengthen stimulation a few times. Both Bu and Xie (reenforcing and reducing) methods were used in case with conditions of both Xu and Shi (i.e. insufficiency and excess activities).
3. Methods of observation:
(1) Course observation: A course included 6-8 trials. Before and after each course the patients were examined by ECG which serves as an objective index for effectiveness.
(2) Observation: ECG were made 3 minutes before acupuncture, during needle-retaining in position. 5 minutes after withdrawing of the needles respectively.
4. Classification of results:
(1) Complete relief: Symptoms subsided, stethoscopic and pulse palpation and ECG were all normal.
(2) Evidentally relief: Stethoscopic and pulse palpation was nearly normal, uneasiness nearly relieved and ECG evidently effective.
(3) Helped: Improved subjectively or objectively.
(4) Noneffective.
5. Analysis:
Of the 46 patients who suffered from arrhythmia, 40 patients were illed with excitable abnormal origin, in which 10 patients were completely relieved, 15 patients were evidently relieved and 15 patients were helped. Other 6 patients were ill with excitable abnormal conduction. Although they did feel some symptomatic relief, yet ECG remained no change. In all helped cases, the shortest course was only two times of acupuncture and longest was 14 times. With a total effective rate of 87% (95% Fiducial limits: 74-95%).
