Yen Hua, et al. (Department of Acupuncture of Yueyang Hospital, Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine)
In our acupuncture OPD, we have treated 299 cases of asthma by the method of purulent moxibustion. All of our cases were treated in the summer time. The acupuncture points, which we have chosen, were Dazhui and Feishu. Upon those points direct moxibustion were applied once every other days with 3 times as a course of treatment.
We gave the patients one course of treatment once a year. After direct moxibustion, we covered the burned points with traditional plasters to form purulent moxibustive sore. We changed the plasters every day until the sore healed.
The Standard of the Therapeutic Effect:
We followed up the patients one year after the treatment and compared the times and severity of attacks with those before treatment.
1. Excellent Effect: After treatment, there was no attack within one year or the attacks were much less frequent and lighter, and the patients' labour force was markedly increased.
2. Good Effect: The attacks were less frequent and lighter, but the improvement was not to a marked degree.
3. No Effect: The condition was the same as before, or only some symptoms had slight improvement.
Observation of Therapeutic Effects:
The percentage of good effect was 70.6% and that of excellent effect 29.1%.
The efficiency of this therapy varies with the age of patients, the complications and the different types according to traditional Chinese symptomatic dialectics.
In the excellent cases, youth were much more than the patients in other ages, while according to statistic data of the percentage of good effect cases, this is not evident.
In the good effect group, patients without pulmonary emphysema (75.6%) were more than those with pulmonary emphysema (61.3%); cases of "cold" in nature (77.8%) were more than those of "heat" in nature (56.8%). (They were similar in excellent effect group.)
Laboratory observation: Cases with the blood hemoglobin and blood red cell count below normal value were increased during or after treatment.
Of 20 cases with white blood cell count above or below normal value, 16 turned to normal range after treatment. But in 86 cases with white blood cell count in normal range, there was slight up or down change with no statistical significance.
In 42 cases the index of lymphocyte transformation rate and E-RFC originally below normal range were markedly increased 2 months after treatment. Among 18 cases with E-RFC value below normal, there were 13 cases turned to normal range; and among 10 cases with lymphocyte transformation rate below normal value, there were 9 cases turned to normal range. In cases with E-RFC and lymphocyte transformation rate in normal range, there appeared some declination after treatment, but without statistical significance.
