Tian Conghuo (Researching Groups of the Respiratory System of Guanganmen Hospital, Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine)
Asthmatic bronchitis is a common disease of the respiratory system. At the present time the therapy for this disease at home and abroad is mainly by administering hormones and other medication for relaxing spasm, relieving asthma and resisting allergy. They have certain palliative effects for a short period, but there are no methods of treatment or medicines which give lasting effects, let alone radical cure. According to the traditional Chinese theory of "nourishing yang during spring and summer days", we took four herb drugs, i.e. white Mustard seed 21 g, Corydalis remota (fumaric) 21 g, and roots of Gansue (Euphorbia kansui) 12 g and mixed them to form a paste with ginger juice. The paste was applied to patient's points "Feishu" "Xinshu" and "Geshu" on both sides for 4 to 6 hours once every ten days during hot weather, and thrice yearly.
Since 1974, we have systematically observed 205 cases of bronchial asthma for three successive years. The gross effective rate was 81.95%, 54.14% were markedly improved and 21.95% cured. The longer the duration of application of the paste the better was the effect. The best curative effect was to apply the paste for three years. Another 220 cases were divided into two groups for comparative observation for one year. One group of 130 cases, using the method of sticking the paste on the acupuncture points during hot days, had good curative effect rate of 77.69%, and another group of 90 cases, having received the general treatment of traditional Chinese and western medicines, obtained a curative effect rate of 18.88%. Statistical treatment (x{2}=73.955 P<0.001) showed marked difference between the two groups.
We studied the underlying principle of curative effect of the paste applied on the acupuncture points. We used certain immunological indices such as macrophage activity, lymphocyte transformation, E "roseknot", IgA, IgG, IgM, IgE and alexin C[3] etc. on some patients before and after treatment for more than two years repeatedly. The tests indicated that the therapy played a role in increasing the immunity of the organism, especially marked was the cellular immunity.
Advantages:
1. This therapy has a better long-term effect, and to certain extent has the effect of radical cure. After four years' treatment, the rate of patients free from recurrence is 21.95%. The reason is probably that this therapy has increased the immunity of the organism.
2. There is no side-effect as compared with hormone treatment, even used for a long time.
3. The method is simple, economical and easily popularised.
4. The method of appling this particular paste on the acupuncture points during the summer remission period is a special feature of our traditional Chinese medicine. It opens a new way to preventing the recurrence of the disease.
