In recent years, the clinical practice has demonstrated that acupuncture treatment not only could relieve the clinical symptoms of angina pectoris of coronary heart disease, but also could improve the ischemic electrocardiogram and the functional state of the left ventricle of the patients. In order to further understand the action site of acupuncture, the cervical-thorax connection by electrodes with the impedance plethsymogram amplifier RGA-5 and the multichannel register RM-86, which was first proposed by Kubicek in 1966, was used to measure the cardiac out-put from the body surface.

Following is the measurement of the 35 patients who suffered from angina pectoris of coronary heart disease with typical clinical symptoms and ischemic change of ST-T wave in ECG by acupuncture on Neiguan point. After insertion, the needle is twisted for 2 minutes, and retained for 15 minutes before withdrawal. Recordings should be made 3 times, and about 20 cardiac cycles recorded each time. About 10 waves are anlaysed and the average value is calculated. Under the same conditions, self contrast is made without acupuncture. The paper speed is 100 mm/second. The results are summarized as follows. The stroke volume (V.) of the patients who have angina pectoris and the cardiac output (CO) are highly correlated. with the cardiac index (CI): CI=11.10.02V, r=0.69; CI=0.52±0.49CO, r=0.88. There is no significant correlation between the stroke volume, cardiac output and HI, RZ interval and heart rate (HR).

Before acupuncture, the stroke volume of the patients who have angina pectoris is 62.53ml, after acupuncture it is reduced to 1.76 ml (P>0.4) on an average. There is no statistical significance. However, there is a significant difference of the following three items (P<0.05).

Before acupuncture, the cardiac output per min is 4.24 l. the cardiac index is 2.56 and the heart rate is 68.56 times/minute.

After acupuncture, the cardiac output per min is 3.98 l. the cardiac index is 2.43 and the heart rate is 66.31 times/minute.

The control group of angina pectoris of coronary heart disease without acupuncture: There is no marked change of the stroke volume, cardiac output, heart rate and cardiac index before and after contrasting. Therefore, there is no statistical significance (P>0.1).

It is shown that through the measurement of the cardiac output by non-invasive method acupuncture treatment for angina pectoris on Neiguan can decrease the cardiac output. We consider that clinically, acupuncture on Neiguan point has a certain curative effect in treating angina pectoris of coronary heart disease. Therefore it is possible that the flow of the coronary artery is improved, and is not related to the cardiac output.
