Hydrogen-helium laser of low power has been used in medical treatment in this country since 1975. Reports of it as anaesthetics are rare. There are few reports comparing the effects of laser and acupuncture. We recorded 44 rheoencephalograms and 58 skin temperatures of the patients of myopia and hypertension before and after the laser treatment and found that laser did have acupuncture-like action.

What we used is hydrogen-helium laser, 1.5 milliwatt in power, about 2 millimeters in diameter of the light spot and 20 centimeters from the apparatus mouth. The treatment lasts 4 minutes at each point, 2 to 3 points at each time, once daily. The course of treatment is 10 days. The points for treating myopia are "Touguangming", "Zuguangming", "Taiyang", "Yanglao"; those for treating hypertension are "Renying", "Quchi". We had treated 20 cases of myopia and 6 cases of hypertension. The short-term effect rates were 83.3% and 60% respectively.

Rheoencephalogram and skin temperature were recorded each time before and after the laser treatment. The results were as follows:

1. Laser could improve the brain circulation. After the laser treatment, the amplitudes of rheoencephalogram were elevated, the up-stroke time shortened, the velocity for volume flow accelerated, and the up-stroke angle enlarged, all of the statistical values were significant. The amplitude changes of rheoencephalograms resembled those of rheoencephalograms before and after electro-acupuncture anaesthesia and the effect of laser was more or less superior to that of electro-acupuncture.

2. Laser could raise the skin temperature. After laser treatment, 77.5% of the skin temperatures at the point of "Yingxiang" were raised. After electro-acupuncture, the skin temperatures at the point of "Suliao" were also raised. These two resembled each other.

3. Laser treatment had the action of readjustment. We found that in normal subjects of controls the amplitudes were lowered; most of the up-stroke time, the up-stroke angle and the vascular resistance exponential were stable.
