Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Department of Neurology, Huashan Hospital of the Shanghai First Medical College

Hereditary ataxia is one the chronic progressive degenerative disease of the brain and spinal cord. Up to the present, no effective treatment has been reported in the literature.

We had 38 cases of hereditary ataxia previously treated by vitamins B compound without any effect, one-fourth of them, however underwent acupuncture therapy, gave remarkable improvement. The therapeutic value was encouraging and promising.

53 cases classified into 3 groups, namely:

(I) those manifested chiefly with muscular rigidity,

(II) those had both rigidity and tremor and

(III) those, chiefly with tremor. Following the acupuncture, in (I) the reducing of rigidity was quite impressive and promising, in (III) the improving of tremor was often fluctuating and disencouraging while in (II) the rigidity was usually minimized but not the tremor.

Regarding to the method of treatment, the acupuncture points selected for the cases of hereditary ataxia were Naokong, Tianchong and Tongtian and those for paralysis agitans were Qianding, Buihui, Chengling and Xuanlu.

The electric current, employed in acupuncture therapy, was usually adjusted at the frequency 120-150/min., duration 20 min., and voltage just tolerable by the individual. A course of treatment consisted of 15 times, once a day.
