Observation On The Effect Of Acupuncture On Electro-Cardiographic Changes With Cathode-Ray Oscilloscope In 100 Cases Of Coronary Heart Disease

Beijing Cooperative Group of Studying Coronary Heart Disease

Since 1975, the effect of acupuncture on the electrocardiogram has been studied in 100 consecutive cases with coronary heart disease. Acupuncture points used were as follows:

Points Shanzhong, Neiguan, Zusanli, Quchi, Shenmen, Rugen and Jianli, etc. Continuous observations were made for 24 hours with the Xs type of cathoderay oscillograph machine made in Shanghai. Marked improvements in the electrocardiograms were found in 30 cases after acupuncture for 1-20 minutes. There was restoration of the S-T segment to different degrees. T-wave improvement was especially marked. However, a deepening of the inverted T wave was noted in 3 cases. No instantaneous changes could be observed in 67 cases.

Results after acupuncture:

1. A return of S-T segment and T wave to normal in 23 cases.

2. Improvement in T wave in 5 cases.

3. Improvement in S-T segment in 4 cases.

4. Deepening of inverted in T wave in 3 cases.

We inferred that the results were probably related to the effect of acupuncture, mediated through the central nervous system or the ganglia of the autonomic nervous system.
