The effects of acupuncture at Shanzhong, Xinshu and Jueyinshu, as main points and Shangwan, Youmen and Zusanli as secondary points on the amplitude of the posterior wall of the left ventricle and the stroke volume recorded by a XZY-III, IV type cardiac reserve diagnostic device in 100 patients with coronary at non-point sites and 40 normal persons and the effects of acupuncture in 25 patients were studied. The results were as follows:

1. The mean values before and after acupuncture in 100 cases of coronary heart disease were as follows: Amplitude of the posterior wall of the left ventricle: 6.84±1.43 mm, 8.78±1.57 mm; stroke volume: 65.59±17.63 ml, 81.72±20.9 ml; minute output of the heart: 4.95±1.47 L/min, 6.28±1.84 L/min; out-put index: 2.96±1.04 L/min/M{2}, 3.75±1.064 L/min/M{2}. After acupuncture, significant differences (P<0.001) were noted in cases with coronary heart disease.

However, no significant difference was noted in normal persons after acupuncture (P>0.05). These results indicated that acupuncture might produce improvement in left ventricular function in patients with coronary heart disease.

2. The mean values before acupuncture at non-point sites in 25 cases of coronary heart disease were as follows:

Amplitude of the posterior wall of the left ventricle: 7.22±1.05 mm, stroke volume: 63.91±28.06 ml, minute output of the heart: 4.25±1.52 L/min., out-put index: 2.56±0.93 L/min/M{2} and no significant change was found after acupuncture (P>0.05). When compared with those of the group treated with acupuncture at point sites, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01), indicating the effectiveness of the points selected in this series.

The present study illustrated well that acupuncture could not only be used in the treatment of coronary heart disease, but also provided clues to the mechanism of action of acupuncture in coronary heart disease.
