Wei Yougen (Wuhan First Hospital)

212 cases with symptoms and signs of peripheral facioplegia were treated with acupuncture and moxibustion. Generally we used reinforcing method (mild stimulation) only, but moxibustion was added after acupuncture to those patients with Xuhan (similar to hypofunction). The main points were Dicang, Jiache, Sibai, Yingxiang, Tuwei, Zanzhu, Sizhukong, Xiaguan, Hegu and supplementary points were Daying, Yifeng, Tongziliao, Zusanli. Only 5-8 points were selected each time and the needles were allowed to stay for 10-20 minutes. Among 212 cases treated, 133 (62.7%) were completely cured by acupuncture and moxibustion within 1-2 courses of treatment. 13 (6.1%) cases were markedly improved and 57 cases (26.9%) improved. The total rate of clinical effectiveness was 95.6%.
