Analytical Report On The Therapeutic Effect Of Acupuncture Treatment For Peripheral Facial Paralysis

Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Changchun Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine

1008 cases of facial paralysis were treated with acupuncture and moxibustion. There were 698 male and 310 females patients. So far as the age is concerned, the young and middle-aged had an overwhelming majority.

The main therapeutic measure used for 1008 cases of facial paralysis was the allopathic, dialectic treatment of acupuncture. We treated this disease by local moxibustion to promote perspiration, by needling every other day with prismatic needles and letting the blood of the cheek on the diseased side into oral cavity, then by acupuncture, as an auxiliary measure "Hegu" and "Zusanli". Upon relief of inflammation and disappearance of local edema on the diseased side, the next principal remedial measure was to acupuncture the face, while "following bodily network tissues to pick points" serves only as auxiliary therapy. The chosen points of acupuncture are "Jiache", "Chengjiang", "Yingxiang", "Xiaguang", "Sizukong", "Tongziliao", "Huliao", "Zhanzhu", "Hegu" and "Fengchi" etc (picked alternately each time). When acupuncturing "Hegu", we chose the side opposite to the diseased site. The operation techniques used included local weak acupuncture accompanied by supplementary, salutary means and strong stimulation by "following bodily network tissues to pick points far apart" so as to get rid of the pathogens. The needles were generally left at the points for 10-20 minutes, and part of them electrified with induced current until numbness of the diseased site was felt. The additional measure of quick and repeated "cupping" was adopted to treat those long protracted cases with apparent muscular atrophy and muscular hypotonia. Treatment was given once per day or every other day. A single course failed to effect a complete cure, a second one should be started after three to five days' intermission.

In 118 cases acupuncture was combined with drug therapy ("qian chen powder" used in 68 cases, VB[1] and VB[12] in 41 cases and strychnine in 9 cases).

The cases of complete cure and marked effect amount to 61% of the total. The rate of success is 96% and that of failure only 4%.
