Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Guanganmen Hospital, Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine
600 cases with peripheral facial palsy were treated in the out-patient-department, using mainly acupuncture and moxibustion. The effective rate was 98.5%, 123 cases out of 600 cases were examined with electric stimulation.
Methods of observation:
Only those cases with well-established diagnosis of peripheral facial palsy were studied (the secondary facial palsy were excluded).
Prescription of acupuncture points and manipulation:
The main points of acupuncture and moxibustion were: Jiache, Dicang, Xiaguan, Fengchi, Taiyang, Zanzhu, Tinghui; and according to the symptoms of the individual patient the following points were selected as adjuvants: Yangbai, Yingxiang, Sibai, Quanliao, Chengjiang. Acupuncture was done over the sound side or Houxi and Ligou points were added in cases associated with spasm of the facial muscle, The manipulation method adopted were that of plain-enforcing plain-reducing, reenforcing with heat or acupuncture with moxibustion. For early cases and these without nerve degeneration, poking with needle was done in point Tinghui. For chronic cases, or these with degeneration securinine nitrate was used for injection treatment over the acupuncture points. Catgut imbedding in the acupuncture points and traditional Chinese and western medicine were also given in individual cases.
The criteria of cure is identical with the general data. Results:
Cure 336 cases (56.0%), remarkable improvement 72 cases (12.0%), improvement 155 cases (30.5%), non-effective 9 cases (1.5%).
The relation of electrical stimulation examination (ESE) with the result of treatment:
A total of 123 cases had undergone the ESE. Among the 58 cases without degeneration, 53 cured (91.38%), the average duration of treatment was 38 days. Of the 47 cases showed partial degeneration, 11 cured (23.7%), and the average duration of treatment lasted 118 days. Only 2 cases were cured in 18 cases with complete degeneration and the average duration of treatment lasted for 235 days.
