Acupuncture Treatment Of 403 Cases Of Schizophrenia

Out-patient Department, Shenyang General Hospital of PLA

This paper gives a clinical analysis of acupuncture treatment of 403 outpatients with schizophrenia. The therapeutic results are as follows: cured (219 cases, 54.4%) markedly improved (71 cases, 17.6%); improved (67 cases 16.6%) ineffective (46 cases 11.4%). Thus the total effective rate is as high as 88.6%, among which cured & markedly improved amounts to 72%.

From the statistical data, there were no correlations between the therapeutic results and the factors such as sex, age, number of recurrence, and classification according to traditional Chinese or Western medicine. The therapeutic effect of the cases with numerous recurrences was similar to those with a single psychotic episode. The prognosis of simple schizophrenia is usually considered poor, but in our report, it was comparable with other types.

The therapeutic results are better in cases with obvious predisposing factors or those with acute onset and short durations. It is worthwhile to note that, in our experience, there were 7 cases of duration of illness longer than 10 years, but all were well cured.
