In the treatment of patients with the symptoms of apastia stuper, affectomotor and the intention of suicide we have adopted electro-acupuncture convulsive therapy (EACT) instead of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) since 1970 and have made satisfactory curative effect.
Fifty-six patients have been treated by different methods as mentioned above in order to find out the different clinical effect between EACT and ECT.
For EACT we acupuncture the patients in the points Baihui and Dinshen by the electric acupuncture machine with battery of 12 volts transport electric potential of 80 volts and at a frequency of 50 cycles per second lasting one to three seconds each time. For ECT we treat the patients by electroshock therapy machine with 220 volts AC, 110 volts transport electric potential at a frequency of 50 cycles per second lasting for one to three seconds each time.
We have made 297 times of different therapy among fifty-six patients, 160 times for EACT and 137 times for ECT.
The followings are the results between the different therapies. It takes 3 minutes and 37 seconds for a patient to recover his conciousness and 31.6 seconds to regain normal respiration after EACT whereas it takes 4 minutes and 37 seconds and 54.6 seconds respectively for ECT. 4 cases revealed the symptoms of cyanosis and one case with symptom of affectomotor and 3 cases with vomiting after EACT, while 2 cases revealed the symptoms of cyanosis, 2 cases with the symptoms of affectomotor and 2 cases the symptoms of vomiting after ECT.
The results suggested that the curative effect is about the same between EACT and ECT.
The above mentions show that treatment by EACT is better than ECT. The advantages of EACT are as following:
a. The loss of consciousness and the convulsion of patients are slighter in degree. The recovery of consciousness and respiration for patients are much faster after convulsion.
b. In general, patients treated with EACT do not show the side-effect of headache, vomiting, loss of orientation and amnesia.
The recent report showed that the curative effect of ECT consists in producing the manifestation of epilepsy. And the loss of memory is related to the loss of consciousness when convulsion occurs. So an idealized ECT may present the manifestation of epilepsy, with less loss of consciousness in the way that the manifestation of epilepsy is the same but with slighter loss of consiousness.
It was said that unilateral ECT has same curative effect as bilateral ECT. But the side-effect of unilateral ECT is obviously slighter than that of bilateral ECT. But in EACT because the acupuncture points of Baihui and Dingshen were selected, it can avoid predominant cerebral hemisphere. As this therapy does not present obvious side-effect.
We have also made group experimental researches on rabbits by EACT and ECT for 1,6,12 times in order. Results of these experiments show that both therapies can bring about the pathological changes in the organs of brain, lung, liver, kidney and adrenal glands of animals, but all of them were reversible changes. There was no obvious different effects between EACT and ECT.
