Clinical Analysis Of Moxibustion In Correcting Abnormal Fetal Position

Wang Wenshi (4th People's Hospital, Shenyang)

Moxibustion with moxa-stick above Zhiyin points was used for treating primiparous or multiparous women with abnormal fetal position between 25-40 weeks of pregnancy in our hospital. Cases with a history of toxemia of pregnancy or habitual abortion were excluded. Moxibustion was applied to the points once a day for 15 minutes, and a course of treatment consisted of four applications.

Records of Moxa-moxibustion treatment of abnormal position of the fetus were available in 2069 cases, among them the abnormal fetal position was successfully corrected in 1869 cases. There were 200 cases failed. The rate of success was 90.32 per cent.

Statistical analysis of the data showed that: Women of multiple parity (up to para 6), within eight months of pregnancy with average tension of the abdominal wall showed the best result and only one course of treatment might succeed in correcting abnormal fetal position. In the majority of cases after moxibustion active fetal movements could be felt. This was observed especially in those cases with positive results.

The causes of failure of moxibustion were either excessive tension or overflaccidity of the abdominal wall, fixation of the fetal head in the hypochondriac region, incorrectely selected points for moxibustion or incorrect manipulation.

According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine fetus is linked with the kidney. It belongs to the Kidney Channel of Foot-Shaoyin. This is related to the Urinary Bladder Channel of Foot-Taiyang. The former is said to be the exterior while the latter the interior. Abnormal fetal position results from a loss of equilibrium between the two systems, with deviation from normal relationship.

The rules of traditional Chinese medicine state: "When Yang is active, Yin remains dormant", "when Yang grows, Yin also flourishes", "when Yang advances, Yin recedes". Thus we may treat abnormal fetal position via the Urinary Bladder Channel. Zhiyin point is located at the starting point of "function" in the Urinary Bladder Channel of the Foot-Taiyang. It is related to the Kidney Channel. Therefore heating at this point may restore the equilibrium between the two systems leading to the correction of the abnormal position of the fetus.

Correction of abnormal fetal position by moxibustion with moxa-stick is very simple, safe and effective. This method of treatment can be easily performed in city and village hospitals. Its use on a wide scale deserves consideration.
