Basing upon the research of measurements at home and abroad of electric potential of the body surface, we designed an apparatus to record the objective criterion of body surface potential. Results obtained in experiments indicated that the fluctuation of zero point was not more than ±10µv/4 hrs; its general input resistance 3Mê; sensitivity 10µv; noise not more than 10µv. The body surface potential could be measured and read directly or recorded objectively. During the measurement, 11 electrodes were first fixed upon the level of the Jiangshi point of the upper extremities respectively, and the touch pressure on the skin must be leveled up equally. Six of the electrodes were fixed upon the six acupuncture points of the hand channels, the other five points upon the extra-points between every two of the above channels. We could estimate not only all the accounts of the electrodes at the same time, but also the relationship among them. Then the electrodes were moved and fixed upon the following places such as; the level of Ximen; 2 and 4 cun above Ximen; 2 and 4 cun above Quze. The electric potentials of these six levels could also be measured and recorded simultaneously.
Observations were made of 50 normal people and results were treated by the Calculation Centre of Beijing. They are as follows:
(1) There existed some differences among various parts of the electric potentials at the upper extremities of the human body.
(2) These differences of electric potentials could be repeated in a certain degree, and with better repititions especially within 24 hours. Changes of body surface electric potential by various factors, as sound of bell-ringing, electric pulse and acupuncture etc. has been observed, but the variation tendency recorded could be reiterated.
(3) There was some correspondence between the differences of body surface electric potential and the channels and points. Significant difference was shown between the electric potential of 70% acupuncture points and the electric potential of unacupuncture points (P<0.05).
(4) Though there might be variations in results due to different persons in recording, yet the electric potentials recorded by different persons at the same level were similar.
(5) There was a common tendency of changes in the electric potentials of the same channels on different subjects, but the results recorded were very similar.
(6) On the whole, there were significant differences between the electric potentials of the five channels of the hand and their nonchannel's sites with the exception of the Channel of Pericardium (P<0.05).
