Jiang Zhaoxiang, et al. (Wannan Medical College)
193 cases of cesarean sections were performed under acupuncture anesthesia, with successful rate of 95.8%, and "excellent" and "good" results obtained in 82.9%. The authors discussed the acupuncture points selected, the type of operation and previous operation performed, and also compared with the results of 50 cesarean sections under epidural block.
It is found that the needling point chosen, the types of operation performed, the causes of cesarean section, the condition of patients before operation bear no relationships to the results obtained, their statistical difference is insignificant (P>0.05). The operative results is poorer in the repeated cesarean, may be due to postoperative adhesions, which might influence the outcomes.
The hemodynamic changes during operation are rather smooth in acupuncture group, while they fluctuate greatly in epidural group. Less blood was used in the acupuncture group, although the conditions of the patients in that group were much worse. The postoperative courses are much more uneventful, with less analgesics used and better G.I. functions in the acupuncture group.
The author concluded that cesarean section under acupuncture anesthesia can obtain better results. It is easy to manipulate, much safer with smooth postoperative courses, thus, it is the anesthesia of choice.
