The Application Of Multiple Physiological Indices In Observation Of Nociceptive Reactions In Acupuncture Anesthesia

Research Group of Acupuncture Anesthesia, 3rd Hospital, Beijing Medical College and Department of Psychiatry of Beijing University

It is necessary to have some objective indices to estimate and evaluate properly the regulatory and analgesic effects of acupuncture anesthesia. In this group of experiments, the plethysmogram, respiration and the resistance of skin were recorded with 2 "polygraphs". The indices related to painful and painless stimulations separately or in combination and the indices under the discomfort ischemia of the lower extremity were observed on patients and normal subjects. We also observed the indices related to painful stimulations after induction of acupuncture and under stress. The results are as follows:

1. The change of the plethysmograph can reflect to some extent the existence of pain perception and its intensity. When pain appears, the volume is reduced and the pulse rate accelerated in most cases. The amplitude of reaction paralleled the intensity of painful stimulation and there was no rapid adaptability.

2. The change of respiratory rate can reflect more severe pain but not under milder painful stimulations, since there were many interfering factors. So it is not very precise.

3. The reaction of skin resistance is in conformity with the plethysmograph, but easily adapted.

It can be assumed that the comprenhensive utilization of various physiological indices which is not closely related to each other, can reflect the perception of pain more precisely.
