Observations On The Relation Between The Effect Of Acupuncture And Propagated Sensation Along Channels

Du Hu, He Zhiming, Liang Chujing (Research group of Acupuncture Anesthesia, Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine)

It has been proved by clinical practice that the extent of propagated sensation along channels (PSC) is closely related to the curative effect of acupuncture. Therefore, it is important to study the phenomenon of PSC seriously in order to elucidate the essence of channels and the theory of acupuncture anesthesia.

In this present paper an attempt was made to study PSC with some objective methods. The plethysmograph and borborygmus were chosen as objective indications of the effect of acupuncture. Zusanli point was selected as a site of stimulation.

The plethysmogram of Liangqiu and Xiajuxu was recorded by MPP-3 photoelectric  recorder in 273 cases. The amplitude of pulse waves increased when PSC had been reaching those two points. In contrast, the amplitude of pulse wave remained no change when PSC did not reach them. In 68.5% of the cases observed the variations of the amplitude of pulse waves were in parallel with PSC.

NSC-IT style heart sound pickup was used for borborygmi record. The proportion of cases who had conspicuous change of borborygmi during acupuncture was 78% for 83 moderate PSC and 54% for poor PSC patients respectively.

The results mentioned above demonstrate that the change of the amplitude of pulse wave is more conspicuous in the area where PSC reached, and the regulartory effect of acupuncture on the gastro-intestinal movements is more marked in the patients with PSC than the none. It is worthy for further study.
