Acupuncture Effectiveness In 66 Cases Of Gastroptosis And Its Mechanism

Gastroptosis Treating Group and X-ray Dept., Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine

66 patients with gastroptosis were treated by acupuncture, all those who have failed to respond to the conventional therapy including physiotherapy and medicinal treatment used in traditional Chinese and western medicine. The treatment principle is based on the "Yitongweishu" ("" "Where there is pain, there is Shu point"). Needling was applied at the tender point below xiphoid process to the point near umbilicus for 40 minutes.

The therapeutic effects of the method in 66 patients were measured by the following methods: One is the measurement of prolapse degree of the lesser and greater curvatures of the stomach by means of X-ray films. The results showed that 14 cases out of 66 were completely cured (21.21%), very good results in 17 (25.77%), and satisfactory results in 15 (22.72%), the total effective rate was 69.70%. According to another method of measurement of gastroptosis degree determined by the distance from the angular notch and fundus of the stomach to the connecting line of the iliac crests, the degree of gastroptosis after acupuncture was markely decreased.

The mechanism of acupuncture effects was also studied. By means of the measurement of gastric tonicity, the X-ray films of 35 patients were analyzed. The immediate acupuncture effect was observed by the help of barium meal X-ray films before and after needling. It showed marked ascending effects on the gastroptosis.
