The Observation Of 176 Cases With Gastroptosis Treated By Electric Needling Treatment

Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Hospital of Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine

This paper presents the summary of therapeutic effect of 176 cases with gastroptosis. They were treated with electric needling only. The continuous treatment time is minimum in 12, and maximum in 96, more frequently ranging from 24 to 42 times (57.0%). The criteria of diagnosis are based on typical clinical symptoms, signs and barium meal X-ray findings.

Method of Electric Needling Treatment:

Key points: Zhongwan, Tiwei, Weishang, and Qihai; additional points: Zusanli and Neiguan. Only key points are generally used.

An angle of 45º is suitable and the depth is 1 to 1.5 cun in needling Zhongwan, Tiwei and Weishang points. As for Qihai point, insert 1 to 1.5 cun vertically. Sparse and dense alternate waves of the electric treatment apparatus are used. The negative pole is connected to the needle in Zhongwan point while the positive pole is divided into 5 branches and connected respectively to the two Tiwei points, two Weishang points and Qihai point. The intensity of current is advisable when the abdominal muscle contracts and within the patients' tolerance. Withdraw the needles after 20 to 30 minutes. Treatment was given once a day, 6 days a week, 12 times as a course. 3 to 7 days' rest is ordered between two courses.

Result of Treatment:

Full recovery has been gained in 57 cases (32.4%) (symptoms disappeared and barium meal X-ray examination normal), while obvious effectiveness was gained in 53 cases (30.1%) (symptoms disappeared or markedly relieved, gastric angle notch goes up more than 2 cm in barium meal X-ray examination), improvement gained in 26 cases (14.8%) (symptoms disappeared or relieved, gastric angle notch goes up less than 2 cm in barium meal X-ray examination), noneffectiveness was found in 40 cases (22.7%). Total effectiveness is gained in 136 cases (77.8%).

15 cases previously with severe gastroptosis treated before 1973 were selected and followed up twice. The minimum follow up time is 11 months while the maximum one is 6 years and 4 months. 11 cases have been followed up for more than 5 years. 6 cases were completely normal while mild and moderate degree of the disease was found in 5 cases, all gained relief. This shows that a long period follow up of the therapeutic effectiveness is satisfactory. Two typical cases are listed in this paper. This practice shows that pathologic change of gastroptosis is reversible. A great deal of native materials at home have proved that acupuncture can adjust gastrointestinal function. The result is satisfactory in treating gastroptosis by needling in accordance with the theory of channels and viscera. We think acupuncture may adjust the functional condition of channels.
