Xu Benren, Ge Shuhan (Shengyang Air Force Hospital of PLA)

From Jan. 1976 to Nov. 1978, 120 cases of gastroptosis were treated by acupuncture with a long needle. The therapeutic effects are reported as follows:

I. Diagnostic basis

1. Clinical manifestations: Gastric distention after meal, loss of appetite, fatigue and diarrhea.

2. Barium meal fluroscopy or fluorography of the upper digestive tract shows the lesser curvature beneath the level of iliac crest or the greater curvature 6 cm. beneath the level of iliac crest.

II. Methods

A needle 7 cm. in length is inserted into Juque point penetrating toward left Huangshu. First depress the tail of the needle at an angle of 45º and then elevate it slowly. The first elevation should last for 10 minutes and the subsequent elevation for 3-5 minutes. The patient should have a bed rest for 5-10 minutes after each treatment.

The treatment is given every other day and 10 treatments are considered as one course. In order to ensure the therapeutic effect, the patients are requested to take exercises of the abdominal muscles every morning and might for one year.

III. Standards of therapeutic effect

1. Excellent. Disappearance of all clinical manifestation and restoration of the stomach to its proper position as shown by barium meal.

2. Good. Disappearance of most of the clinical manifestations. The stomach is 4 cm. lifted up.

3. Improved. Some improvement of clinical symptoms. The stomach is lifted up 1-3 cm.

4. Failure. No improvement of clinical symptoms, and no change of stomach position.

IV. Results

1. Excellent: 47 cases (39.1%)

2. Good: 12 cases (10%)

3. Improved: 49 cases (40.9%)

4. Failure: 12 cases (10%)

V. Follow-up of the 47 patients with excellent results.

4 cases recurred in half a year, 2 cases recurred in 1 year and 1 case recurred in 2 years.

Another course of acupuncture therapy was instituted in each case, with excellent result in 2, good result in 2 and improved results in 3.
