In 42 cases of duodenal ulcer patients, the effects of acupuncture on the secretion of gastric acid and its relation with the type of that disease, as classified according to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, have been observed by using histamine injection and successive analysis of gastric juice.

The results observed are shown as follows:

1. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, this disease could be divided into five different types, hyperactivity of "Pi-Wei" (Spleen and Stomach), hypoactivity and "cool-invasion" of Spleen and Stomach, disharmonizing of Liver and Stomach and insufficiency of vital energy both in "Spleen" and "Kidney". The gastric juices of empty stomach were subjected to analysis for all patients before acupuncture treatment. To compare the results of total acidity, free acid and hydrochloric acid equivalents, considerable difference can be detected among different types of duodenal ulcer. The change of gastric secretion after acupuncture treatment also confirms the reasoning of such classification of traditional Chinese medicine.

2. After the treatment of using the principle of differentiating the symptom-complex to select the points, the cases of excessive or insufficient gastric acid secretion have decreased (from 20 to 15, and 8 to 4 respectively) and those of normal gastric acid secretion increased (from 13 to 22).

Through regressive analysis of the analytical data it shows that acupuncture treatment results in prominent regulatory effect on gastric acid secretion. The absolute values of most regressive coefficients are greater than 0.5, it means the regression curve makes an angle about 45 with the abscissa, so that there is a tendency of quick returning to the normal point after acupuncture treatment.

3. As for the effect showing by the curves of gastric acid secretion by puncturing the single point Zusanli, it shows prominent inhibiting effect on higher curves, and stimulating effect on relaxing curves and normal curves. As for "stair type" curves both effects are observed. These phenomena further elucidate the regulatory effect of acupuncture on gastric secretion.

Since the regulatory effect of acupuncture on gastric juice secretion is gradually decreased after treatment as seen from the analytical data, it is feasible to increase and stabilize the therapeutic effects with repeated treatment.

4. For the 42 cases observed, 18 of them belong to "hypoactivity of Spleen and Stomach" type. This type of disease is most frequent in our work. The analytical results show that for such patients, the values of relative coefficient of "single point" treatment are always greater than that of the points prescription according to differentiating the symptom-complex. It implies that "Zusanli" may be the main point for the treatment of the ulcer of such type. For other types of duodenal ulcer, besides the main point "Zusanli", other points may also work as well.
