Many works have been carried out for the relationship between the motility of digestive tract and Zusanli point. It is recognized that needling Zusanli point can affect the function of gastrointestinal movement. But, whether needling other points or points selected at random could bring about any change of gastrointestinal activity, is a question unsettled. Therefore, the study of specificity of points is significant. It is the most basic problem concerned with the study of acupuncture and acupuncture anaesthesia mechanism. We selected 54 cases of peptic ulcer and 54 cases of normal subjects, and observed the relationship between the change of gurgling sound and needling Zusanli, Yanglingquan as well as control point (at a place between the 2nd and the 3rd metacarpals). The specificity of Zusanli point was investigated through comparative experiments.
MSC-IT type heart sound pickup was adopted for recording the gurgling sound. The density of sound frequency was considered as the objective index of acupuncture effect. In order to increase the number of acupuncture and control point, two points were pricked each time for each case. The points mentioned above were divided into six groups in pairs which were listed in number. The points selected at random according to the successive number. The acupuncture opportunity for each point was equal. The time interval between the first needle and the second one was 20 minutes. If the interval was too short, they would be interfered with each other and the result might be affected. As compared with the experimental data obtained from the first pricking of the three points and the results treated statistically, needling Zusanli point would decrease the influence on gurgling sound of both normal subjects and patients. The density of sound frequency decreased 44.38% and 34.38% in average accordingly. The difference between the change rate of gurgling sounds before and after acupuncture was exceedingly evident (P<0.01).>0.05). It was shown that needling Zusanli point was specific for the change of gurgling sound in human body.
