Preliminary Study Of The Relation Between Propagated Sensation Along Channels And Effectiveness Of Acupuncture Anesthesia

Cooperative Group of Acupuncture Anesthesia in San Ming District, Fujian Province

According to the principles of "selecting the acupuncture points along the channel of the suffered region" and "promoting the 'qi' (vital energy) to travel to the affected region" in acupuncture therapy of Chinese medicine, the paper deals with the relation between PSC and effectiveness of acupuncture anesthesia on 533 cases of abdominal operations for 2 years. Points below the knee of the channels were selected.

The extent of PSC was graded in line with the distance which PSC did travel from the acupuncture point to the operated area. The effectiveness of acupuncture anesthesia was evaluated on the standard adopted by all research groups in China.

It turned out that the rates of "good" of 77 cases with marked centripetal PSC (i.e. PSC to travel over one half of the course between the acupuncture point and operative area), 173 cases with centripetal PSC (i.e. PSC to travel less than one half of the course between acupuncture point and operative area) and 284 cases without centripetal PSC were 86.75%, 73.26% and 54.23%, respectively. In comparing  the group of centripetal PSC (or the group of marked centripetal PSC) with the group of patients without centripetal PSC (284 cases), the difference was highly significant (P<0.01). If 117 cases of gastric operation were counted alone, the difference were also highly significant between the above groups.

The results mentioned above demonstrated that the effectiveness of acupuncture anesthesia of patients with marked PSC was better than the patients without PSC. It suggested that there was close relation between PSC and the effectiveness of acupuncture anesthesia.

It is well known that there are many points in common between acupuncture anesthesia and acupuncture therapy, though some differences between them still exist. Therefore, it is very important to learn earnestly the valuable experience of Chinese medical practice in the long run, and furthermore to investigate the more effective methods for promoting "qi" to travel to the affected part will promote the efficacy of acupuncture anesthesia.
